How did you meet?
It was April, 2007. My cousin and I were at a party at a mutual friend’s house and we were in the kitchen fixing ourselves a plate of food. Derrick and another gentleman entered the room. My cousin and I looked at Derrick, and then at each other. He was handsome! I’m sure our facial expressions said it all. Derrick and I made eye contact for a few seconds, but, after that, nothing. He seemed to ignore me.
A couple of hours later I was sitting in a chair checking messages on my cell phone when, in my peripheral vision, I noticed him walking by. He stopped, turned around, and asked, “Were you staring at my butt?” “Huh. You must be joking,” I said. “No,” he said. “You were staring at my butt. I could feel it.” It was a little corny, but I laughed, and it broke the ice. So much so that we talked non-stop for three hours. There was sooooooo much chemistry. From that day forward, he pursued me, and I mean pursued me diligently.
When and how did you get engaged?
He proposed to me at my job. It was CRAZY! I couldn’t believe he did it there of all places.
I actually knew it was coming. We had already shopped for rings, so it was just a matter of time. The day before, we had a romantic dinner at an upscale restaurant. We were all dressed up and the ambiance was perfect. I just knew he was going to pop the question. He didn’t. I could tell he was nervous though. The next day, he took me to lunch. Right after, we headed back to my office and he proposed.
Why did you choose to marry your spouse?
Derrick totally gets me. With him, I am 100% me. He accepts me for who I am, flaws and all. This has allowed me to let down my walls and truly open my heart to love.
Tell us about your wedding day
It was a beautiful, early fall outdoor wedding. My husband was absolutely dashing. And I must admit, I looked like a “masterpiece.” I told my husband to take a good look, because it was highly unlikely that he’d ever see this beauty again. LOL. Our daughter was the flower girl and my step-son was the ring bearer. My brother escorted me down the aisle to the sound of a live orchestra. I tried to hold it together, but I cried. My heart soared when I saw my husband. It just felt right. My cousin, a minister, married us. We were then serenaded by a duo, singing “Prayer” by Josh Groban. The male vocalist’s voice was AMAZING. The duo alternated between English and Italian. It was simply perfect.
After the “I do’s” (which is really the most important part), we had a cocktail hour, followed by dinner. The live jazz band during dinner was incredible. Then, it was time to partaaaaay. We danced and danced and then danced some more. We couldn’t have asked for a better wedding.
Why does your marriage ROCK?
I could go on and on about what I love about our marriage. We are friends, lovers, and confidants. We have so much fun together. He really is my absolute favorite person. And he’s such a M A N. He’s proactive and is willing to do whatever it takes to move our family forward.
Our marriage ROCKS because we are 100% committed to the happiness of each other. We are 100% committed to the success of our marriage. We been through so many life-altering issues during our relationship. During those times, we chose to put in the effort to make our relationship work. And probably the best thing about our marriage is that when we disagree, we pray on it. I love Love LOVE this about us. We know God has our back and wants our marriage to succeed.
